The Polka versus the Waltz: Czech National Dances in the Political Context of the Nineteenth Century
Original language description
Polka and sousedská become such familiar concepts of Czech culture that they have been generally accepted as folk and national ? that is Czech ? dances. When searching for the form of these dances in the classic Czech collections of folk songs and dances, one is confronted with a very varied and contradictory picture, one that allows non unambiguous characterization. The research is mostly interested in what helped the dances gain the status of Czech folk as well as national dances, and how they workedas symbols of Czech citizenship.
