Original language description
This paper deals with the relation between music, movement, and place during a festivity in an urban setting. The masopust carnival festivities) held in various parts of Prague since the 1990s present an interesting example of processes in which different kinds of music are taken from various sources and brought into a new context. Using Thomas Turino's notions of participatory and presentational performance, it looks at the various configurations of participants and their roles in respect to the performance in a public space. It shows, how the level of participation in music and dance changes depending on the situation. Also, the issue of authenticity of a music repertory and its relation to a particular locality is discussed as well as the relation between institutionalized folklore revival movement and these „new traditions“.
