The polka and Czech national awareness
Original language description
The article deals with Polka that is known to have played a crucial role within the formation of national movement in Bohemia in the nineteenth century when Czech national society was being established as it helped to create its identity. The dance may have come out of the Czech patriotic circles whose members were men of letters active in the public, political, and cultural life and which promoted the Slavic ideas. Polka had come to manifest the Czech values of modern times which also coexisted with the regional patriotism on the one hand and panslavism on the other. It helped create national consciousness at a time when the attribute national could only be given to things that originated in local Czech villages.
