Waiting to retire in rural Northeastern Brazil
Original language description
In northeast Brazil, rural old-age pensions shape the lives of family farmers and workers, offering the first stable, regular income for many. These pensions enable older adults to plan financially, fulfil dreams, and stabilise precarious work. Pensioners become key economic figures in their households, often applying for payroll loans, which marks their entry into mass-consumption society. Contrary to the common belief that retirement leads to reduced income and dependency, rural pensions in this context provide greater financial stability and autonomy. This chapter explores how pensions reshape social relations and individual agency among rural populations.
