The Development of Personal Names in Czech

  • Original language description

The paper deals with Czech first names from the most distant past up to the present day and with second personal names (so-called bynames (from the 13th century to the end of the 18th century) and family names/surnames (from the end of the 18th century to today) in Czech. Five periods are described in the development of Czech first names (until the 13th century, from the 13th to the 18th century, from the 19th century until 1945, from 1945 to 1989, from 1989 to today). In the part devoted to the development of the second name in the Czech lands, social and chronological differences of naming as well as the motivation of the family names used in current Czech are studied.
