Parts of speech as markers of the convergence of written and spoken Czech (based on the material of journalistic texts, 1990-2019)

  • Original language description

The article deals with the dynamics of parts-of-speech system in Czech, as it appears in texts from four Czech daily newspapers from 1990-2019. The changes in the frequency of certain parts of speech in Czech well document the process of convergence of the written journalistic language with the spoken language, because parts-of-speech systems (especially in inflectional languages) reflect very well the differences between the spoken and written modes of language existence. The author notes, among other things, that in written journalistic texts from the last three decades, some parts-of-speech that are frequent in spoken language, especially pronouns and verbs, are increasing in frequency. In written journalistic texts, on the other hand, the frequency of some parts of speech that are abundantly used in older written journalistic texts, such as nouns and adjectives, is declining.
