Cornutus with Old Czech Glosses from the Library of Crux of Telč (Critical Edition)
Original language description
Crux of Telč (1434–1504), a Czech priest, teacher, and scribe, is renowned for his extensive manuscript collection, preserving both Czech and Latin texts. He transcribed and glossed numerous school texts, including dictionaries and linguistic treatises. His copy of Cornutus, a popular Medieval Latin lexicographical-didactic text, is among his most significant contributions in this field. Distinguished by numerous Latin and Czech glosses, as well as extensive scribal corrections, the manuscript (from 1478) serves as a valuable testament to scholastic and linguistic practices in the late Middle Ages. The study presents an edition of Crux’s manuscript, now housed in the National Library of the Czech Republic (XI C 1, fols. 180v–185v). It includes the poetic parts of the work with Latin and Czech glosses (Cornutus antiquus, Cornutus novus, Conclusio), as well as the moral commentary (Comentum super Cornutum).
