Friedrich Nietzsche in the National Theatre in Prague.
Original language description
Above the proscenium arch of the National Theatre in Prague there is a tympanum with a personification of the arts, who is placing a wreath on the heads of the theatre muses Thalia and Melpomene. Greek gods accompany these muses, next to the muse of comedy we see Dionysos and next to the muse of tragedy, Apollo. The proscenium arch and tympanum were created by Czech sculptor Bohuslav Schnirch in 1883. SchnirchŽs tympanum is ostensibly classical in style and iconography, but wholly un-classical in its spirit, because of its tension - it contain a contradiction, which cannot be resolved. Dionysos and Apollo are presented as antagonists who cannot be reconciled and this contradiction points to Nietzsche, who in this very sense reevaluated not only Dionysos and Apollo, but also our perception of world in general.
