Chemical microbiology, an interdisciplinary field on the road to molecular biology, 1920-1948
Original language description
The paper clarifies the origins and development of chemical microbiology also called general microbiology, a new interdisciplinary field at the border of biochemistry, bacterial physiology and physical and organic chemistry in the years 1920-1948. The British scientist Marjory Stephenson, Director of the Cambridge research laboratory of Medical Research Council (MRC) which cooperated with the Cambridge Dunn Institute of Biochemistry, played a decisive role in its formation. The paper is a contribution to better understanding of the formation of molecular biology, and interdisciplinary sciences in a more general perspective.
