Manilius’s Symbolism in the Park Sculptures of the Lnáře Castle
Original language description
The contribution deals with the collection of twelve sculptures from the sculpture workshop of Platzer family (the 18th century) which was made for the garden of the castle Lnáře (South Bohemian Region). The sculptures represent twelve gods of Greek classical pantheon. The contribution improves the wrong identifications of several of them. The bases of sculptures are decorated with the perso¬nified ecliptical constellations (signs). The key for the understanding of the whole composition of the work is the poem Astronomica by Marcus Manilius from the 1st cent. AD. On its basis the correct attribution of the gods to the zodiacal signs is described in the contribution. The idea of Lnáře collection is unique in our country.
