  • Original language description

In the context of the current pan-European housing crisis, for which the lack of affordable housing is a key factor, alternatives are being sought that could halt this negative trend. Between owner-occupied and private rental housing, some form of collective or cooperative housing is mentioned. This form of housing construction has a tradition in the Czech lands that goes back more than 100 years. However, the question remains as to what the actual activities and role of housing cooperatives were in the various stages, what their legal status was and what role they played in the economic system of the state. This paper attempts to answer the above questions by responding to the contemporary debate on the housing crisis and by trying to clarify, through historical research, the shape of cooperative housing in the past decades.
