Student Internationalism in the Global Cold War. The Foundation and Split of the International Union of Students
Original language description
Established in 1946 in Prague, the International Union of Students (IUS) was one of the most significant student international organizations in the post-war world. With the emerging Cold War, the IUS gradually adopted the Soviet language and position on important international problems. At the same time, however, it increasingly became a hub of decolonization attracting student unions from the Third World and focusing on promoting universal student rights. The paper interprets this initial period of the IUS’ history (1946–1952) as a time of emerging Cold War divisions, but it also focuses on the IUS’ attention to student problems across the world, in particular in the Global South. Decomposing the IUS secretariat to individual actors, the chapter examines the IUS’ various policies, strategies of legitimization and efforts to preserve universalist student internationalism.
