Histories of Maternity: Ideas, Practices and Transfers
Original language description
Over the last two centuries, women’s bodies have been one of the main objects of biopolitics. In the framework of modernizing societies, control over women’s bodies, and in particular over their reproductive functions, represented a symbolic and practical tool for the implementation of social and political projects. The workshop aims at analyzing how different social, political, and cultural contexts interpreted ‘modern’ maternity practices, what norms and values they conveyed through mothers’ health care and childbirth practices, and how mothers reacted top delivered practices.
