The chapter examines the interplay between democracy, national identity, and historical cultures in East Central Europe from the 1970s to the 2020s. Using the concept of liberal nationalism as a theoretical framework that reconciles individual autonomy with the ideal of cohesive national identity within a democratic context, the chapter highlights how civic patriotism emerged in the regional dissident movement as a counter to traditional ethnic nationalism, fostering critical self-examination of national identities. Ultimately, the author contends that the dissident historical debates laid the groundwork for a liberal-nationalist, civic-based consensus as the cultural basis for the newborn democracies, which, however, with the partial exception of Czechia, was soon destroyed after 1989.
