In situ neutron diffraction studies of the R-phase transformation in the NiTi shape memory alloy.
Original language description
Thermally induced martensitic transformations in the NiTi polycrystal during cooling were investigated in situ using the high-resolution neutron powder diffraction technique. Special attention was paid to the lattice-spacing changes accompanying the R-phase transformation which precedes the transformation to monoclinic martensite in NiTi under suitable thermomechanical loading conditions. It was found that the R-phase coexists both with B2 austenite and B19' monoclinic martensite. It is already significantly distorted in early stages of its formation, and the rhombohedral distortion further increases with decreasing temperature.
