Thermal properties and cw-laser operation of the ytterbium doped borate Li6Y(BO3)3.
Original language description
The potential of laser crystals doped with ytterbium is no more to prove, taking into account thenumber of publications on the subject (non-exhaustive list). Nevertheless, reaching high power cw-lasers is not realised without thermal load. That is why thermal properties are often a good criterion to confirm the laser potential of a crystal.Borate compounds can offer good optical quality with high gain cross-section over several tens of nanometres which are important properties for laser applications. But poor thermal properties are unfortunately also a common characteristic. Crystals of Li6Y(BO3)3: Yb3+ have already been tested in laser experiments and good potential was identified for this compound [12,13]. Spectroscopy characteristics of the Yb dopedLYB compound were recently published. Thermal properties as well as new and more specific cw-laser studies are exposed here in order to complete laser characterisations of this compound.
