The spin reorientation and Verwey temperatures of pure magnetite, magnetite with vacancies and magnetite containing Ti, Zn, Al and Ga was measured on single-crystal samples using the ac susceptibility. Combining these results with electronic structure calculations explanation of magnetocrystalline anisotropy of magnetite is suggested
