Absence of ferroelectricity in BiMnO3 ceramics
Original language description
The results of factor-group analysis of all phonons in possible monoclinic C2/c and C2 structures of BiMnO3 were compared with our experimental infrared and Raman spectra. It was concluded that the crystal structure is centrosymmetric C2/c up to investigated 550 K. Dielectric relaxation was revealed in THz spectra above TC1 giving evidence in strong lattice anharmonicity and a dynamical disorder. Due to the dielectric relaxation the THz permittivity suddenly increases at TC1 and saturates at 50 % highervalue. The dielectric anomaly reminds antiferroelectric phase transition. Nevertheless, the low-temperature dielectric studies did not reveal any ferroelectric or antiferroelectric hysteresis loop, so we did not find any evidence for multiferroic behavior in BiMnO3.
