High tilted smectogens with bromine-substituted molecular core
Original language description
We synthesized a series of rod-like mesogens with a Br atom laterally substituted in the molecular core, which consists of four benzene rings, namely one biphenyl and two phenyl rings connected by ester bridges. In the terminal chiral chain a lactate unit has been utilized. The SmA* and SmC* phases have been established in broad temperature ranges. The physical properties of the materials have been studied. The temperature dependences of the spontaneous quantities, polarization and tilt angle, have beenmeasured as well as the helical pitch, layer spacing measurements and dielectric spectroscopy have been performed. Tilt angle reaches a rather high value up to 45 deg. on cooling.
