Effect of co-monomers? relative concentration on self-assembling behaviour of side-chain liquid crystalline elastomers
Result description
This work deals with the synthesis and chemical-physical characterization of a new series of liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) in the form of monodomain films, showing the nematic and smectic A phases. The synthesis, mesomorphic characterization and 2H NMR study of two constituent mesogens is reported, as well as the preparation of monodomain and polydomain polysiloxane-based side-chain LC elastomers containing different concentrations of the two mesogens and a constant crosslinking density of 15%. The phase diagram and mesomorphic behaviour of these new liquid crystalline elastomers were determined by DSC, POM and X-ray diffraction studies. Thermo-mechanic curves confirmed the shape-memory properties of these films, which have elastic properties optimal for applications as thermo-mechanic actuators.
