Self-assembling properties of lactic acid derivative with several ester linkages in the molecular core

  • Original language description

An effect of several polar ester linkage groups incorporated in the molecule core of a chiral lactic acid derivative on self-assembling properties has been investigated by several experimental techniques, namely polarizing optical microscopy, small angleX-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric spectroscopy and optical studies. The compound possess the paraelectric SmA* and ferroelectric SmC* phases over a broad temperature range. Basic properties of the self-assembly material possessing the polar phases, i.e. mesomorphic behaviour, spontaneous polarization, birefringence, optical transmission and structural properties have been determined. The obtained results are discussed and compared with that of other liquid crystalline materials. The effect of polar ester linkages incorporated into the molecular core has also been discussed.
