Polytypism of cronstedtite from Chynava, Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Single crystals of cronstedtite ((Fe2+, Mg2+)3-x Fe3+)(Si2-xFe3+x)O5(OH)4, from the borehole near Chyňava, were studied by the four-circle X-ray diffractometer. From precession-like images of reciprocal lattice planes OD subfamilies (Bailey’s groups), and polytypes were identified. EPMA of selected crystals was performed, too. The most common polytype is 2H1, sometimes accompamnied by with 2H2 (both of the group D). In addition, one rare 3T crystal (group A), twinned by reticular merohedry interchanging the obverse/reverse settings of the rhombohedral subfamily structure, was found. Another rare, partially disordered crystal contained 1T (Group C), 3T and traces of 6T2 (group A) polytypes. EPMA of selected crystals revealed minor amounts of Cl up to 0.01 apfu, and small amounts of Mg (0.13–0.24 apfu) regardless of the determined polytype
