Stability of diamond films against aging and sterilization

  • Original language description

Nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films are increasingly studied due to their potential in life science. However, biomedical applications require their long-term stability against aging, resistance to harsh conditions and sterilization methods, etc. In this study the aging-stability of chemical composition of H/O/F-terminated NCD surfaces exposed to open air and sterilization process was investigated by SEM, XPS, Raman and WCA measurements. The first sample set was aged in the open air for 60 days. The second set was ultra-sonicated in deionized water or rinsed in ethanol. Wettability of aged F-/H-NCD films remained the same. The ultra-sonication slightly changed only the WCA of H-/F-NCD samples. The ethanol treatment influenced the WCA of H-/O-NCD samples. XPS measurements confirmed surface chemistry stability of all treated NCD films. The effects of autoclave treatments will be also outlined.
