The critical velocity of transition to turbulence in 3He-4He liquid solutions

  • Original language description

The transition between laminar and turbulent flows around a quartz tuning fork vibrating with frequency omega in superfluid He-4 and concentrated solutions (5 and 15% He-3 in He-4) in the temperature range 0.3-2.3 K has been studied. The temperature dependences of the amplitude of the critical transition velocity v(cr) are obtained. The relationship v(cr) similar to root(eta omega/rho) is shown to be applicable for the description of these dependences in concentrated solutions of He-3 in He-4 with density rho and viscosity eta, but this formula does not hold for the temperature dependence of v(cr) in pure He-4 over the entire temperature range explored. It is also shown that in contrast to pure He-4 temperature has virtually no effect in concentrated He-3-He-4 solutions on the drag coefficient in both laminar and turbulent regimes.n
