A novel Schiff base ligand and its copper complex: Synthesis, characterization, X-ray crystal structure and biological evaluation

  • Original language description

A novel Schiff base ligand of (4-nitroaniline-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde) (a) and its complex [Cu(4-nitroaniline-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde)2] (b) were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. The antibacterial activities have been studied invitro against two gram-negative and two gram positive standard bacterial strains. The ligand and its metal chelate were screened for their antimicrobial activities using the disk diffusion method against the selected bacteria. The complex (b) was a stronger antibacterial agent than the free ligand as well as its corresponding metal salt, and it was more active against the gram-positive than gram-negative bacteria.n
