Diamond coating reduces nuclear fuel rod corrosion at accidental temperatures: the role of surface electrochemistry and semiconductivity

  • Original language description

To decrease probability of the accident in nuclear reactors, it is necessary to reduce the surface corrosion of Zr fuel rods. In this work we present the ability of diamond surface coating to protect ZIRLO nuclear fuel rod against corrosion under nuclear reactor accidental conditions. ZIRLO rod surface was coated by 500 nm diamond layer grown in a pulse microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition apparatus. We focused on the role of carbon phases and accidental temperatures (from 850oC to 1000 oC) in ZIRLO oxidation and hydrogen uptake processes. Dia-mond coating made strong barrier against hydrogen uptake into ZIRLO under all tested conditions.
