Elastic softening due to the quadrupole interaction between the singlets in the crystal field of HoNiAl

  • Original language description

The rare earth compound HoNiAl shows ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic-type phase transitions at TC = 13 K and T1 = 5 K, respectively. To investigate the successive phase transitions and a quadrupole interaction, we measured the elastic modulus C66 in HoNiAl by means of ultrasonic spectroscopy. The transverse modulus C66 shows an elastic softening below 60 K. The softening continues down to TC, and then an elastic hardening and softening are observed at TC and T1, respectively, reflecting the magnetic phase transitions. The softening above TC is well reproduced by a Curie-Weiss-type equation, indicating that the softening originates from a quadrupole interaction between the singlets in the crystal electric field. A negative quadrupole-quadrupole coupling constant is obtained from a theoretical fitting, suggesting an antiferroquadrupolar-type interaction between Oxy-quadrupoles.
