UV-assisted expansion of oxyhydroxides surrounding BiVO4 crystals for improved solar water oxidation
Original language description
Owing to their comparable capacity to hole scavengers, oxygen evolution catalysts (OECs) have been vigorously investigated to modify photoanodes to address the serious charge recombination problem at the surface. In this work, we fabricated the Fe- oxyhydroxides on the surface of BiVO4 using iron (II) sulfate solution as a precursor through wet chemical deposition and ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation, forming the BiVO4/FeOOH(2)/UV. The resulting BiVO4/FeOOH(2)/UV exhibited a much improved photocurrent of 3.78 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V versus (vs.) the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) with negatively shifted onset potential compared to BiVO4 (1.56 mA/ cm2). With the help of co-catalysts, surface charge transfer on BiVO4 has been improved with facilitated water oxidation kinetics. Consequently, the BiVO4/FeOOH(2)/UV showed an improved charge transfer efficiency of 92.3 % at 1.23 V vs. RHE when compared to BiVO4 (38.1 %) and BiVO4/FeOOH(3)/UV (73.9 %), with the latter being obtained by using iron (III) chloride contained solution as a precursor with UV illumination. Furthermore, we extended this fabrication method to other types of OECs, fabricating BiVO4/NiOOH/UV and BiVO4/CoOOH/ UV photoanodes. Both photoanodes delivered much improved photocatalytic performance with the help of UV illumination, demonstrating the potential scalability of the strategy.
