    Effect of flux on the microstructural and tensile properties of IS 2062-E450 structural steel by submerged arc welding

    This study investigates the role of flux composition in determining the microstructure and mechanical behaviour of welds. Submerged arc welding was used to weld E450 structural steel plates with EM12K filler wire to test the microstructure and tensile characteristics of two fluxes, GEE505 and GEE541. Microstructural investigation revealed ferrite and pearlite in EM12K welds. Electron backscattered diffraction and transmission electron microscopy showed flux-derived micro inclusions in weld metal. These inclusions significantly influence the welded joints’ mechanical properties. Using GEE541 flux with EM12K weld improves the yield strength, tensile strength, and microhardness by 9 %, 9 % and 13 %, respectively. Moreover, the percentage elongation and impact toughness decreased by 22.72 % and 39 %, respectively. It is attributed to specific mechanisms such as grain refinement, inclusion strengthening and higher grain average misorientation. These findings reveal the critical role of flux composition in determining weld quality and mechanical properties of EM12K weld.
