Localized phase retrieval application for analyzing multi-material samples
Original language description
X-ray computed tomography (CT) provides three-dimensional insights into internal structures without mechanical intervention. However, standard absorption-based CT has limitations when imaging materials with low X-ray attenuation or multi-material samples with similar attenuation values, often resulting in insufficient contrast for detailed analysis. Phase-contrast imaging addresses this challenge by utilizing X-ray phase variations, with propagation-based imaging being one of the most accessible methods. This approach requires phase retrieval, which enhances contrast but potentially reduces spatial resolution, particularly in heterogeneous samples containing high-density particles. This paper presents localized phase retrieval, a novel method designed to mitigate this limitating. Instead of applying phase retrieval globally, it selectively processes specific regions within tomographic slices. This approach preserves spatial resolution in critical areas while improving contrast where necessary, leading to better material distinction. By enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of multi-material sample analysis, localized phase retrieval expands the capabilities of phase-contrast CT advanced imaging applications.
