    Chapter 3 complements the overview of ferroelastic materials by providing another unifying perspective, consisting in the introduction of the formal concepts of ferroelastic species and layer groups, which are particularly useful to clarify the symmetry-imposed properties of ferroelastic domains and ferroelastic domain walls, respectively. At the same time, the concept of ferroelastic species also allows one to define and classify the ferrolastic materials themselves.
