Extreme temperature events in Central Europe: are climate models able to reproduce them?

  • Original language description

This study compares one-day and multi-day temperature extremes in (i) observation, (ii) GCM simulated control climates, (iii) statistical downscaling from observation, and (iv) statistical downscaling from GCMs, in central Europe. The comparison of the 20- and 50-year return values does not appear to be sensitive to what statistical method of the estimation of parameters of extreme value distribution is used. The skill of GCMs and downscaling in reproducing extreme high and low temperatures and heat andcold waves is limited.
