Coronal mass ejections, geomagnetic storms and height profile of the ionospheric response over the Europe.

  • Original language description

Variability of the ionospheric parameters increases substantially during geomagnetic storms initiated by solar disturbances. Considering different composition, the spectrum of the UV and energetic particles reaching each ionospheric region, the D, E, F1and F2 regions all have their own structural characteristics and a different response of each region to storm-induced disturbances could be expected. This contribution deals with the ionospheric parameters analysis during strong or severe geomagnetic storms associated with halo coronal mass ejection (CME) events. All available data for selected events from several European ionospheric stations were analysed. The geomagnetic storm effects on F1 region (150 ~ 200 km) are substantially weaker than those inthe F2 region (above 200 km). Independent of the sign of the geomagnetic storm effects on NmF2, the effect on the electron density, if any at all, in the lower F region over European high-middle latitudes, seems to be rather negative tha
