Severe storm in Bavaria, the Czech Republic and Poland on 12?13 July 1984: A statistic- and model-based analysis
Original language description
We analyze synoptic and sub-synoptic meteorological conditions which occurred before and during a selected historic event with organized convection in Central Europe. The re-analyses ERA-40 are used to investigate the fields of dynamic and thermodynamicvariables at the synoptic scale. It is demonstrated that some variables may reach abnormal values not only in a case of heavy steady rains, but also in a case of severe convection. The non-hydrostatic limited-area NWP model COSMO is employed to reforecast the event at the sub-synoptic scale. The verification of model results indicates the simulated convection environment does not differ significantly from the real conditions. The subsequent analysis reveals vertical shear and stability conditions favorable for the intensification of convective processes ahead of propagating gust fronts.
