Testing radar-based hail detection criteria
Original language description
There are several algorithms using C-band radar data, which can evaluate the hail proper location and the time of hail occurrence. We tested selected hail detection methods by using Czech and German radar data sets. Seven methods were selected: CAPPI method, Zmax method, VIL, VIL density, Waldvogel criterion, SHI and POSH. The verification based on German data was done by using information about hail damages on buildings. According to the traditional verification scores (POD, FAR, CSI) the best thresholds were found. During the verification on Czech data we looked for the thresholds, which indicated the number of hail impacted pixels and the hail occurrence times in a similar way for all criteria. Though the criteria are highly correlated, the most successful at the identification of the German hail events was newly developed combi-criterion. The combi-criterion was defined by requesting that at least 2 from 4 basic optimized criteria detected the hail occurrence. The combi-criterion w
