  • Original language description

This special issue of the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar–Terrestrial Physics includes selected papers presented at the 4th IAGA/ICMA/CAWSES-II TG4 Workshop on “vertical coupling in the atmosphere–ionosphere system”.nThe 4th IAGA/ICMA/CAWSES-II TG4 Workshop was hosted by the Department of Aeronomy, Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (IAP ASCR) in Prague.nThe topics covered a wide range of research areas, reflecting the need to study the Earth's ionosphere/atmosphere system in a coupled sense. The coupled effects in terms of the modulation of waves from lower to upper atmosphere as well as from low-to high-altitudes, electrodynamic and compositional changes, plasma irregularities at different latitudinal regions of the globe due to the varying energy inputs, as well as lower and middle atmosphere electrical phenomena studies were presented. A special attention was paid to the mesosphere–lower thermosphere (MLT) region which is a critical region in the coupling between the lower/middle atmosphere and the upper atmosphere/ionosphere since it is here that physical processes filter and shape the flux of waves ascending through the mesosphere into the overlying thermosphere.
