Full-field measurements of large compressive deformations in human trabecular bone using digital volume correlation
Original language description
Cylindrical sample of human trabecular bone has been incrementally compressed and its deformed microstructure captured using time-lapse microtomography. From the captured projections the deformed microstructure has been reconstructed and the displacementand deformation fields computed using a digital volume correlation (DVC) method. The approach is based on a modified Lucas-Kanade algorithm and optimized for accuracy. Displacement and strain fields are then compared to a FE model of the sample subjected to the same boundary conditions and loaded similarly with the experiment. Precision of the method is assessed using artificially deformed micro-CT images as well as data from the compression test. Results show possibility of used DVC algorithm to capture the displacements and strains in trabecular bone microstructure with high accuracy when a high-resolution X-ray detector is used.
