Characterisation of lime putties made of quicklime calcined under different conditions
Original language description
Limestone calcination and the technology of quicklime production has an influence on the slaking reactivity of lime. The slaking consequently can be an indicator of the quality of the lime putty. An experimental study focusing on the characteristics relating to lime slaking and the quality of lime putty has been carried out. This study aims to determine the influence of historic lime production on the properties of lime putties. Two different limestones were calcined in a traditional single batch, woodfired flare kiln. Simultaneously, samples from commercially operated continuous vertical shaft lime kilns were taken when the same batch of limestone was calcined. All samples were slaked to lime and the reactivity and yield were determined. The particlesizes were characterised by a laser based analyser. Surface area and SEM observations were carried out on the dry putty samples. The short aging period does not allow any conclusions in terms of crystal changes.
