Assessment of properties of lump lime produced in a traditional? flare kiln
Original language description
Studies of historic mortars show that the way lime is burned and processed affects the mortar product in its final properties, appearance and performance. A variety of kilns and processing procedures existed in the past and the production technologies should be understood when an authentic replica of a historic mortar is to be produced. The research focuses on characterisation of quicklime produced in different ways. High calcium limestone is experimentally burned in a single batch flare kiln fired withwood and in industrial shaft kilns using oil, gas and coal as a fuel. The micro-structure of the produced quicklimes is evaluated focusing on the influence of calcination temperature and its duration. SEM, MIP and BET analyses are applied to evaluate the morphology, size of crystallites, porosity, pore size distribution and surface area of the produced limes. The obtained quicklime characteristics are compared to the reactivity of lime and also the potential quality of the hydrated prod
