Linseed oil for durability improvement of lime-metakaolin mortar
Original language description
Linseed oil was commonly used in ancient times as a protective treatment for building materials due to its ability to grant hydrophobic properties. It is an environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient water repellent with promising features for designingrepair mortars. The aim of the present research is to study two linseed oil treatments on lime-metakaolin mortar: application of a protection layer onto the surface of the specimens and mixing the oil in the mortar bulk. Characterization of specimens was performed after four months of curing: carbonation and hydraulic reactions were evaluated by thermal analysis, flexural and compressive strength were assessed by conventional mechanical tests and hydric characteristics were studied by mercury intrusionporosimetry, water absorption by capillarity and water vapour permeability. Specimens were subjected to sodium sulphate resistance test and the degradation action was monitored by water absorption methods: microdrop absorption time and w
