Adaptation strategies for built cultural heritage
Original language description
The most destructive impacts on heritage assets are form high-frequency natural disasters that can be attributed to climate (change) phenomena. The weather effects act slowly, but in the long term they lead to disastrous impacts. They should therefore be considered as natural threats. These impacts include an extensive range of problems, because weather situations generate a wide variety of actions and loads on buildings. We present here a short review of important climatic components and their effects, namely temperature variations and gradients, precipitation and humidity impacts, including salt mobilization and crystallization, and also wind action. General adaptation and mitigation strategies and measures against the damaging impact of climate change are discussed in two categories - non-structural and structural. The role of three groups of actors in the weathering and natural disaster protection process is presented, and the importance of regular structural health inspection and continuous maintenance is underlined. The need for appropriate measures is illustrated by means of two specific examples.
