Dynamic stability of the Golden Gate Bridge deteriorated by roadway wind barriers

  • Original language description

This study focuses on aerodynamic forces, moments and dynamic stability of the Golden Gate Bridge with a roadway wind barrier in place. Wind-tunnel experiments are carried out on the bridge-deck section to compare drag and lift force coefficients, pitch moment, galloping and flutter sensitivity for the bridge-deck section with and without a wind barrier. The experimental results indicate an exhibited influence of a roadway wind barrier on the Golden Gate Bridge aerodynamics and aeroelasticity. In particular, when a wind barrier is in place, there is an increase in drag force coefficients in the entire range of investigated wind incidence angles. For the lift force coefficients, the trends are different for negative and positive wind incidence angles. Absolute values of pitch moment coefficients are larger in the experiment with the wind barrier. Wind barriers are not likely to cause galloping instability, while flutter may be expected at lower wind velocities than it is the case for the empty bridge-deck section.
