Investigation of fracture process zone development in quasi-brittle materials using flexular tests and radiographical methods

  • Original language description

This work is focused on combination of flexural testing of a quasi-brittle material with X-raynimaging methods. X-ray radiography and X-ray tomography were used for identificationnof fracture process zone in the material and for analysis of its spatial development duringnflexural loading. Specimens of quasi-brittle materials were subjected to three point flexuralntests in custom design loading device and were simultaneously scanned using X-ray radiography.nThe tests were divided to several pre-defined loading steps given by measured force-displacementndependency. Imaging using X-ray planar images was performed during loadingnbetween loading steps. As two-dimensional information is insufficient for relevant analysisnof fracture process zone the loading was interrupted in given steps and X-ray tomographynscans were taken. Reconstructed three dimensional data was used for identification ofnfracture process zone in the vicinity of the notch and for visualization of its developmentnunder increasing loading. To conclude, measurement technique of quasi-brittle specimennwas successfully used for reliable identification of fracture process zone and has a potentialnfor further development.
