Original language description
The paper briefly presents history of art and architecture conservation supported by scientific investigations and knowledge. Long term cooperation of conservation activities with interdisciplinary research within natural and technical sciences has led to the emergence of a self-contained scientific discipline - conservation science which has gradually transformed in so called heritage science. Aims and goals of these scientific disciplines are summarized. The history is illustrated by a national Czech development where a modern research infrastructure for cultural heritage was recently built and contributes to contemporary heritage science growth.
