Assessment of the mechanical behavior of scarf joint fastened using cylindrical wooden dowel subjected to tension loading

  • Original language description

The study addresses issue of missing information about all-wooden joint's mechanical behavior, which underlie their designing and use in wooden structures. Therefore, the goal of the study was to supply information about prediction and analysis of the mechanical performance of scarf joint fastened using wooden dowels, which is commonly used in reconstruction of historical timber structures. The main objectives of study were: (1) to determine the joints' slip moduli and load-carrying capacity by means of analytical and experimental approaches, (2) to assess the mechanical behavior of dowels in more detail through experimental investigation, and (3) to perform a strain analysis of dowels. For these purposes, the optical technique employing 3D digital image correlation (3D-DIC) was used. The experiments were done on the full-scale specimens meeting the requirements listed in European standards EN 383 and EN 26891, which were made from Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) and English oak (Quercus robur L.). The mechanical load was induced in tension parallel and perpendicular to grain direction within the main components. The results showed great correlation between experimental and analytical approach, which was based on theories such as Beam on Elastic Foundation (BEF) and European Yield Model (EYM).
