The present Study responds to the request by the Council of the European Union to the European Commission to conduct a study on “Risk assessment and prevention for safeguarding cultural heritage from the effects of natural disasters and threats caused by human action”, in the framework of the Work Plan for Culture (2015-2018)1 - Priority area B cultural heritage. Heritage assets and resources are of great value to society from a cultural, environmental, social and economic point of view, and their safeguarding from the continuous pressures of natural hazards, anthropogenic effects and extreme events due to global changes is of paramount importance.
