Experimental and numerical investigation of oak dowel

  • Original language description

Dowel joints with wooden fasteners are an important part of many timber structures. They have been used especially in historical timber structures. In the past, the most of the dowels were made of hardwood – in central Europe typically of oak wood. Recently they have been used also in new buildings taking the advantage of their mechanical and aesthetical function. Besides their use in roof trusses, it is possible to incorporate them also into individual structure component production where gluing or metal fasteners are unfavourable, e.g. a special panel production. Actual normative materials (principally Eurocode 5) do not provide sufficient safe design description. Eurocode 5 gives only design instructions for dowel joints with metal dowels, but guidelines for joints equipped with wooden dowels are missing. This article contains remarks and conclusions of initial study focused on assessment of all-wooden joints fastened by oak dowels and presents the results of experimental tests and numerical model focused on the load bearing capacity and stiffness. These quantities are necessary for design according to the theory of limit states. A statistically appropriate number of specimens (hundreds) was tested to acquire reliable values, which might be used as a background for new design rule suitable and even tailored for all-wooden joints in the future.
