Monumental mosaics in Czechoslovakia between 1948 and 1989
Original language description
This contribution briefly describes the development of monumental mosaic works in Czechoslovakia in the 2nd half of the 20th century and points out main issues of their rescue, restoration, protection and maintenance. The number of mosaics isndecreasing considerably every year due to little public awareness of mosaic art plus the ideological connotations that are (often mistakenly) associated with them. Monumental mosaics made of stone, ceramics or glass are more durable thannother techniques (mural painting, sgraffito, stain glass etc.), hence generally more suitable for the installation in public areas indoor and outdoor. Some of more than three hundred Czechoslovak mosaic works that have been preserved to this day represent an unmistakable evidence about the aesthetic taste of the time. This paper explains some examples of rescue and restoration as well as vanished history.
