Structure alterations of cement hydrates under the effect of chemical attack
Original language description
29Si, 27Al and 23Na solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to study the structural changes in cement pastes exposed to sulfate-chloride attack. Material’s deterioration was marked by the polymerization of Si-Al chains of the main binding phase (calcium (aluminate) silicate hydrate), the transformation of calcium aluminate hydrates into Al(OH)3, and the association of detectable amounts of Na in the Si-Al chains. Limestone in cement triggered these alterations. Chlorides mitigated their extent, while sulfates reduced chloride binding by calcium aluminate hydrates.
