Proceedings of the workshop 'Lime based materials for repairing historic structures'

  • Original language description

Workshop takes place in the context of activities of a number of RILEM-TC's, which developed and spread knowledge on the characterisation, damage analysis and repair of historic masonry. The reason for these TC's to be set up was thenoccurrence of damage cases in historic masonry, often very soon after repair. The initiative to lounge the first of these TC's, Characterisation of old mortars with respect to their repair was taken by Prof Luigia Binda. This TC delivered publications on the different ways of characterisation: mineralogical, chemical, mechanical. The next TC, Repair mortars for Historic Masonry focused on the choice of repair materials compatible to the existing historic fabric, taking into account the environmental conditions - moreover, this TC dealt with the definition of requirements for repairs in the various fields of application such as renders/plaster, repainting, bedding, grouting. These TC's were followed by the TC Specifications of non-structural grouting of historic architectural surface, which made publications on Reattachment through grouting, Surface repair and Consolidation of renders and plasters. The current TC Specifications for testing of lime-based repair materials is targeting the development of appropriate tests for lime-based mortars: the current tests developed for cement-based mortars being inadequate.
